What You Need To Know
Life in Tel Aviv
Things can be a little different in Israel. Here are 5 tips to know before you go
1. Get to the point
Between the hot climate and never knowing what tomorrow may bring, Israelis don’t waste time beating around the bush — take comfort in expressing your opinions, requests and so on. That said, Israelis treat one another like family so feel free to ask strangers for help with directions or to recommend their favorite hummus joint.
2. Social Plans Are Spontaneous
No need to schedule a coffee meet up two weeks in advance like other cultures (NYers, can you relate?). Israelis think nothing of getting a call to meet for coffee or a meal on the spot. And, you can feel comfortable inviting yourself over to your Israeli peer’s apartment — of course, they might be busy that day, but it’s highly unlikely they will be offended that you didn’t ask a week in advance
3. No Topic Of Conversation Is Off Limits
Don’t be surprised to be asked the salary you’re expecting at your first job after college, your opinion on political issues and your Robinhood account balance — all in the same conversation
4. Bagels And Lox Don’t Represent Israeli Food
In fact, you’ll be hard pressed to find good bagels and lox. That said, Israeli food has evolved tremendously over the last decade or so and you can fully expect to enjoy some of the best meals of your life here. Everything from expertly grilled kebab to salads with just picked vegetables to toasts with every combination of ingredients imaginable (including vegan and vegetarian galore)
5. Dress Code
Even though Israel has a thriving business sector, business casual is as far as it goes in the sweltering summer. No need to bring a suit and tie.
